Top 11 Health Benefits of Coffee

By

They say that hot dogs are bad because they contain nitrates. They say you should limit your egg yolks because they're high in cholesterol. Stay away from too much soy - it causes impotence, milk chocolate causes pimples and coffee's just plain bad for your system.

Why is it that "they" always seem to find something wrong with the foods that I like? The foods that we've been eating for hundred of years and now suddenly we find out are bad for us? Why the need to ruin a good thing?

Well lucky for us, "they" have decided that coffee is in fact healthy, and that despite the negative effects attributed to it in the past, coffee is good for you! Yes, it may have some flaws, but so do most good things in life. I prefer to focus on the good and overlook the bad (like my mom taught me to!)

So looking for an excuse to drink that extra cup? Well keep reading, below are 11 great ones!

  1. Antioxidant Rich - coffee, due to its high caffeine content, is a great source of antioxidants. Antioxidants are cancer preventative and help fight the negative affects of aging.
  2. Magnesium Rich - unfortunately studies have proven that many American's are magnesium deficient, a mineral necessary to many of the enzymes in your body in order to catalyze reactions.
  3. Anti Bacterial and Anti Adhesive Qualities - believe it or not, Italian researchers discovered this interesting little fact as they were conducting experiments regarding their favorite national drink that was getting a bad rep by health researchers ("them"). Practically speaking, this means that coffee is proven to prevent cavities (provided you don't dump an ocean of sugar into your drink).
  4. Promotes Digestion - because coffee is a diuretic, it generally speaking, sends people straight to the bathroom. When I was doing my research for IBS articles, although some doctors claimed coffee may irritate the stomach, other doctors recommended it as one of the natural tricks to "help move things along" and prescribed drinking a cup or two a day.
  5. Improves Athletic Endurance and Performance - Believe it or not, coffee has recently been labeled a "controlled" substance for athletes participating in the Olympic Games due to the unfair performance advantages large amounts of the drink provides. Coffee has proven to increase athletic endurance as well as general coordination and performing abilities in serious athletes.
  6. Decreases Depression - studies conducted on school age children in Brazil demonstrated that children who drank a cup of coffee before going to school had a much lower instance of depression later in life than those who didn't drink coffee.
  7. Decreases Your Chances of Developing Parkinson's Disease - 6 separate studies conducted by researchers have proven that people who drink large amounts of coffee on a regular basis are 80% less likely to develop Parkinson's disease then those that don't.
  8. Decreases Your Risk of Developing Colon Cancer - studies have shown that people who drink 2 cups of coffee on a regular basis have a 25% reduced risk of developing colon cancer.
  9. Offsets the Damaging Effects of Smoking - coffee has proven to offset some of the negative side effects of heavy smokers, such as heart disease and liver damage.
  10. Treats Asthma and Headaches - asthma and headache medicines contain large doses of caffeine in them due to the substance's ability to treat their symptoms. The caffeine found in coffee, although present in smaller amounts, has proven to have the same positive affects on alleviating headaches and treating asthma.
  11. Reduces Your Risk of Liver Disease - studies have shown that people who drink 2 cups of coffee on a daily basis have an 80% reduced risk rate of developing liver cirrhosis

So what else is left to be said folks - Drink Up!

*Note - all good things must be ingested in moderation. I am not suggesting you drink 6 or 7 cups a day, as an overdose of caffeine is definitely not a good idea. Most of the positive effects listed above were based on a study of 2 - 4 cups a day.

I think this kind of reverce things are coming up because of large cofee production?

Well, what kind of cofee we have has passed through processes which are harmful to us and cofee itself also!

This kind of double point of view are providing doubts!

I like you mr marmalade, your comments never cease to entertain me! I particularly like your name to0 - something comical about it!

Annette Rozen 3 years ago

In answer to mr heal well: part of the reaon why all these facts are emerging regarding coffee, is because the drink has become so popular that health researchers have made it the topic of many studies. In fact, over 19,000 studies have been conducted on coffee over the past couple of decades. Your're right that coffee is a processed food, but then again, just about everything we ingest today has been subjected to some form of processing or to chemicals. If you're a bit nervous, theyre are all sorts of organically grown coffees available for purchase.

I drink 2- 4 cups a week. I know, I know that makes me a minor leaguer compared to the rest of you. But I really savor those cups when I have them. Not sure if I would enjoy them as much if i had several cups a day.

Anyway thanks for the good news, A.R.

Keep up the good work of promoting coffee Annette.

There is another health benefit, but it doesn't entail drinking the coffee; you use the coffee in an enema. Isn't coffee wonderful - no matter which direction it is taken in!

Cheers,

Mick

mickeuan - what a wonderful sence of humpr you have. but no need to revolt the readers

Annette Rozen 3 years ago

Hey YABHM, good to hear from you.

In my opinion, its not a matter of how much coffee you drink, rather how well you are able to savor the drink. Dont let anybody else tell you otherwise!

coffee is not a diuretic

Annette Rozen 3 years ago

It is actually. A diurtic is a substance which speeds up your having to urinate. In the case of both coffee and tea, the active agents classified as methylxathines which are a reult of the caffeine present have a diuretic effect and so coffee is classified as a diuretc. For more info see http://www.coffeescience.org/media/athletic

I agree… coffee is good for you. I like my morning wake up and smell and drink cap a coffee. As much as I love it as strongly I remember word ‘moderation.’ I do not want push my body digest ability to the point when it might broke, then doctor tell me, “You must stop enjoying life.” Moderation, moderation, enjoy your eggs and bacons, and remember what goes in must come out. If you agree with me let’s talk, just Skype me @ HealingMoment Ana_e_t , even if you don’t agree – you’re welcome.

I've always told people my lifetime of coffee guzzling is the reason I had no gray hair. Actually I have a few gray hairs now, but not like everybody else. I can also walk further than most people half my age, and I'm a lot happier too. I know it's the coffee!!

I stopped drinking milk coffee 3 months ago after finding it was actually toxic for the body. Black coffee however is not so bad - it has a bitter taste and is good for your liver. Milk coffee is where we go wrong. You mix a bitter substance with a soothing one, ie milk and you create a malaise within the body. There is a chemical reaction happening here where your liver is fighting to protect itself and other organs. Check it out with a naturopath.

Caffeine is a stimulant, that's well known. In moderation that's fine, but an over supply of stimuli is going to create a crash at some point. Many people who withdraw from their large coffee intake end up with headaches - part of the crash.

Interesting how our teenagers are drinking more and more 'sodas' containing caffeine. There behavior is disturbing, erratic and the crash is creating depression. Caffeine is a drug, no different to nicotine. Moderation works.

Ryguy 21 months ago

I assume the cavity fighting is due to the magnesium. The only way to reap the antioxidant benefits is by drinking coffee black or without dairy milk as it kills them (same goes with tea). Coffee gets a bad rap because people nowadays consume Frappucino's and all sorts of fatty concoctions with dairy in them. As well, the more processing and oxidation a food goes through the less healthy properties there are remaining. Take chocolate for example. Milk chocolate goes through the most processing, contains dairy and sugar. That's why they say dark chocolate with a high cocoa content is better. What I eat (it's pretty expensive mind you) is Cacao (raw chocolate). This is the healthiest food in the world. It has the most antioxidants, magnesium, zinc (the two most deficient minerals for today's diet) fibre, protein, omegas, theobromine, etc. Check it out.

I'm a coffee lover and I really appreciate this hub. It's nice to know that aside from keeping me up when I've got lots of work to do, there are still more benefits that I can get from it.

I do need my coffee but I only drink 16 ounces or 2 cups daily. Working helps me stay in moderation. If I am on vacation and not doing much I find myself pouring that third cup. It helps keep warm in frigid winter weather but is real hard to drink when its warmer than 95 degrees. The smell of coffee is intoxicating!

Love this hub. I am from a coffee family we dont drink alcohol or much of anything else and my inlaws love to give me grief about it. It in nice to find something positive .

michael 9 days ago

So, people research coffee, find coffee bad. People who love coffee, research coffee, find it good. Big surprise there. I approach this with the same scepticism I use for "research" finding ciggarettes are fine when researched by the ciggarette companies and for vitamin supplement research by the supplement companies. None of these studies will ever be truly accurate unless an unbiased party does these studies.
